Everyone who plays golf not only beginners but also those players who are playing golf for a long time should know about courtesy, breeding, and that kind of stuff.
There are three kinds of equity e that we all should be aware of. It is a duty not to enjoy this game only for yourself but also to make them enjoy it to those who are around you. And make sure they are also enjoying the game as well.
Today we are going to talk about the varieties of golf etiquette. Stay with us from the very start.
Categories Of Etiquette
We know that there are three categories of golf etiquette thanks to the Golf Merit Badge. Whenever I think about this game I end up having a voice pop into my head of Kenny Loggins who’s singing in the background. It also happens whenever I hear someone talking about their golf playing and talks to me about it.
And today I am going to be discussing the three types of golf etiquette with full rules, regulations, and with full descriptions. And you can also find the full description of it on USGA’s page here.
- Concerning the players around you
- Make a good place of play
- Take care of the field you are playing in.
- Point no.1 is that you should be thinking about other players also. Remember a great player who always cares for other players. Make sure you don’t disturb anyone.
You might be using some kinds of electronic stuff like Mobile Launching Monitor. So always be careful so that your devices don’t cause anyone to be distracted.
- Point no.2,
You should make a good pace of your playing. Suppose your group is playing slow and there is another group behind you who has caught up to you guys. And now they want to go through so don’t be hasty and just invite them to do so.
- Point no.3,
You so take care of the ground you are playing in. If you make any kind of hole in the field during playing then you should clean up your mess by yourself. Make sure you don’t leave any trace behind of the mess you made.
Etiquette should be taken care of before the game.
Don’t take bags in the clubhouse.
Make sure you leave your bag outside the clubhouse. Because it is considered as good behavior but don’t why. That’s the way it is.
Show concern about their time
As you are in a group you should be always careful about not being late. You don’t want to make them wait for you and spoil the beginning they were about to have.
Be present at the course ten or fifteen minutes before the game starts and don’t ever cancel any game at the last moment. This might be a bad impression on other people about you. The only way you can cancel the game if you’re truly dead. So remember this always you play.
First of all handshake and introduce each other.
Suppose you don’t know anyone in the field and you are playing with total strangers then you need to make a good impression of yours to others. Handshake will do the trick for you.
You are in a group of strangers and you want to introduce yourself to others then shake your hands with others. You can start by telling your name or maybe asking if they are beginner or pro at this game. That’s how it is done.
Dress code
Make sure you always wear a collared t-shirt. Shorts with knee-length or maybe a full-length trouser. Don’t forget about the belt you should wear. Long -height socks with soft, spiked golf shoes. The last thing is the underwear.
Etiquette you need for general play
Be quiet and keep remain silent
You have heard that silence is the best answer. Suppose someone is playing wrong and you noticed it, the best thing to do is to keep quiet just like you do when your wife does something wrong but you can’t say anything, just like that.
Not to mention that also consider mobile phone should be in silence mode or on vibration mode while you are on the golf course.
If someone calls you just ignore it for the time being because the call isn’t important then playing with your friends.
Take your precious time but you shouldn’t be slow
You should probably make a routine so that you could count your time and avoid being slow. As you strike a lot more than the other golfers you should create a routine that would help you out to do so.
Always remember that those players who make good use of that time are called to play and those players who are slow because of their own fault lose friends as much as time passes.
You should make preparation before it turns out to be your turn. You need to look at the ball and gorge distance. Take the Golf club from your bag and be prepared for your turn.
Make sure you don’t just start the whole process only when it is already your turn to hit the ball. This might help you to be faster and people would think good about you.
When you’re playing, don’t think about how good or how bad you play. We all go to the course to have some fun and chat with others to decrease the stress of work. Just keep moving forward, be positive, and play with all your heart and you will win everyone’s heart in no time.
Don’t just get angry over nothing.
While you are in the course there is nothing like that bad publicity. So whenever you get angry over something, try to calm yourself. Because if you lose your temper, the people around you might think bad about you.
Suppose you are a little bit angry over something, it can come to that and you may throw away your club because of your anger. Because if you do that you won’t be called to play with them again.
Don’t even make any kind of holes in the ground or in the green despite losing your temper. It’s not the way you should go with it.
Whoever comes to play most of the players are here because they just want to take a little break from their scolding wives. So let them have fun as they want.
Watch out where you step on
You should always take care of where you are stepping on. If you are stepping on another’s golf line they would get angry with you and maybe we’ll get frustrated. So if you take your steps carefully you will not offend anyone in the green.
You should stay away at least 2 yards from their golf line. You are not even allowed to stand directly in front of their ball or in front of their target.
Standing with an angle of 45° of the golfer’s shoulder is the worst place you want to stand and it is also very distracting to them. That’s why you should always keep a distance of 5 yards between their ball or target and you.
Give importance to other people and respect the course
Make sure to keep the course neat.
Sometimes when you shoot a ball you make divots in the ground. It’s your duty to repair the mark you created by yourself and turn it back as it was before. It is a responsibility to all the golfers that should be completed by themselves.
If you leave the mark without turning it back as it was before. People would say about you being lazy. Lazy people lose friends and comrades quickly.
Talking with your partner’s swiftly.
When someone is shooting a ball you should inspire them by saying good shot/great shot etc instead of decreasing his inspiration by saying wrong shot or maybe unbalanced swing etc. By saying so you are welcoming them to move forward and next time to play better.
Suppose someone is asking you what they are doing wrong then what should you say. You should answer by saying “looks good, maybe could be a little bit better” or something like that. That’s the way you should make friends and interact with others.
You can speak to anyone if you like to. Try not to give them creeps about you, talk swiftly, appreciate them by talking about their good sides like “your swing is so good” or something like that might do the work.
You might also get caught up to someone who isn’t fun at all, anti-social, try to escape them and never ask them anything if you don’t want to. Because these people really give me the creeps. Making friends in the course is such an easy task as it looks like.
Have an eye on other groups too
Have a close eye on other golfers
You are going to hit a ball and see a person standing within your reach then you can tell him to move. But if you accidentally hit someone you should apologize right away to him/her. But sometimes they would want to fight you, then what should you do?
I pick up my club and swing it over my head that scares them out and I don’t have to fight anymore. That’s what I do actually. But I would recommend you not to do this instead of doing this you can apologize to them if they seem to be considerable.
If they want to report your behavior and want your membership number then just give them a fake one, that should do it. But it’s better to be a better man. Don’t be like me and try to avoid problems in the course.
They might even want your membership number again. I had never given them my actual number. I was asked so many times for my membership number by many sour old women, I can’t even remember it.
If you hit some young lady try some drama, if you hit some man then apologize to them. But try to avoid as much as hitting you possibly can by shouting to the person who’s in front of the ball “fore!”. Shout with everything you got and if he is lucky then he might be able to dodge the ball.
Try finding other people’s balls for them
You are in a course. You might run into so many balls which were from other groups. If you know which group it then calls them and tells them to take their ball back. This may build your reputation.
Etiquette that is needed on the tee
Stand where you are and be quiet
Prepare for your turn and decide a place where you want to stand still and sit there quietly. You can also comment on other’s shots with welcoming words. This might build your reputation quite a bit.
If their shot was terrible then silence is the best thing you should do. but if you are playing with friends and buddies then you can say anything you like. Because I don’t want to be a part of your hospital fees.
Respect the first player unless playing “Ready Golf”
Generally, the game is predicted by the first one to score the most minimum. Who plays the first one called The Honor “. It would be nothing but a pathetic joke if you say “your honor, your honor” you can say if you are generally a guy who’s always kidding around.
But the players who are pretty much experienced, they play ready golf. Means if you are being ready while the other guy is fiddling around. To keep up the speed hit right before him.
Sit tight until everyone is ready with their balls
The cruelest thing you can do is hit your balls before them and walk away from the teed area to the hole you are aiming for.
This way the people in your group will get to discuss you while you’re playing forward without any care in the world.Unless the other players are jerking off over nothing and watching other guys shooting.
Etiquette that is needed on the green
Make sure not to stop others while standing in their way
Personally, I don’t mind people standing in my way because the field is usually turned up. So it doesn’t matter anyway. But it does feel uncomfortable if anything crosses the path of my ball to the hole within 6 feet.
So it might feel uncomfortable to others when you are standing in their way and it’s stopping them from playing. So make sure you don’t step in their way.
Make sure you don’t step on any players putting line
Repair after you make a hole in the green
Suppose you accidentally make a dent or a hole in the green, make sure you repair it as soon as you notice. This grass can heal so quickly if you repair it within a few minutes and it looks like nothing happened there.
You can simply repair it by using any kind of blade, pocket knife, or maybe with a tee peg. Just make sure you don’t leave it behind to see by others.
Repair these dents, holes as soon as you notice them!
Pin down your ball
Whenever your ball hit the ground, try to pin down your ball so that you can memorize where it was lent before whenever you want to know it’s hit spot.
I simply use a coin if my ball is in someone’s way. You can mark it using a can or a tee peg or something like that. You can mark it also using a flat thing similar to a coin.
Pin down your ball with a flat thing similar to a coin.
Have an eye on your shadow
You should watch your shadow where it is casting especially when it is early morning or late in the afternoon. Because if your shadow touches their ball line, they will simply say “hay, move your shadow”. And you might not want to hear this from them because it will ruin your fun.
Help others by holding their pin
Everyone on the green should help out each other. They should help you withholding your pin and you also should help them by holding their pin.
This can be worked with flags whenever you are putting them into the holes or in the Greens. This main build your reputation quite well.
The Etiquette you should be having after the round
Say goodbye with a handshake
I have been playing golf for so many years. It has been 20 years I think since I started playing golf. And I have shaken my hands with all the players I have met and there is only one person I didn’t shake my hands with.
It was because he broke every single etiquette guideline in the book that the book had to offer and that should be followed by everyone and also for him. Every single day when I said goodbye to the people around me. I said thank you and shaken my hands.
If you think it is not comfortable for you, you can add some extra excuse to leave the ground. It’s all up to you.
Ask others to stay for a drink
Nowadays whenever people say goodbye to others they simply offer each other a drink or a toast. Because it’s fun to have friends and having a drink together.
But if you see that’s bad timing for you to stay or there are some unpleasant people who are present here and you don’t want to be a part of it then you can add some extra excuses like you have an important work to do.
You can even say that it’s your girlfriend’s birthday even though you know deep in your heart that you are single. You can also say that you have your son’s final sports even though you don’t have a sun, to begin with.
Means anything would do, just make them believe that you have work to do and don’t get caught that you are lying to them.
Don’t accept any caps or hats in the clubhouse
Suppose you are entering a bar with your club members. I would recommend you to leave the hair or cap you are wearing because otherwise you might get caught up in problems by simply buying the whole bar.
Important things that should be taken care of in Golf Etiquette.
Make sure you don’t take out your club during other’s shooting. Take it out before eating or you can take it out even after the player has hit.
Make sure you keep your phone in silent mode or vibrate mode while entering the clubhouse. And take it the whole time because you might not want to be a discussion for other people. Use it carefully so that other people don’t mind it.
Whenever you make a hole mark or even a single dent, repair it as soon as possible. You should also help others to repair their PITCH MARKS. It may build a quite good reputation for you. It won’t hurt if you simply help them.
Make sure you don’t mark your scorecard on the field. Even though you are aware that the course is busy, you shouldn’t do that. It might make others lose their temper and get angry with you.
When you are going to hit a ball make sure no one gets in your way. Other people may step on your ball’s range and you should warn them to get away from the track or it might hit them, and they can get injured.
And other things you can do is wait until he gets away from your range. Because if you hit someone it would make them angry and it would be built a negative reputation.
Send some signals to other people of the group you are in if you need help. Suppose you can’t find your ball or your club you can wave your hand to them and call them to you. If you want them to be faster then send them signals so that they will not be left behind.
